pic5b For 41 years, Lynchburg Rail Day brought area modelers and rail fans together for a day of fun, clinics, home layout tours, model contests, and plenty of iron horse trading -- all first sponsored by our local model shop, Trains Unlimited.  The show was organized in 1978 by Jim Revell, who held the first Lynchburg Rail Day behind his store on Lakeside Drive in Lynchburg.  Under his guidance the show grew, moving into successively larger venues to accommodate bigger crowds and more expansive modular layouts featuring all of the popular scales.

Blue Ridge Chapter members helped from the start. They manned display equipment provided by the railroads, including visits by the Best Friend of Charleston, Norfolk Southern's exhibit car, and variety of Amtrak passenger cars over the years. Members helped with set up, model contests and clinics, and eventually took over the food concessions and organized a "white elephant" table as chapter fund raisers.

When Jim Revell sold the shop to Bill Cox in 1996, Lynchburg Rail Day was a well established popular area event operating in the Lynchburg Builder's Association Greenstone Centre. In 2003, Bill decided to retire and sold the store. Coincidentally, the Builder's Centre was optioned to a development.  Both events threatened Lynchburg Rail Day's future. Wanting the show to continue, Blue Ridge Chapter members voted to promote Lynchburg Rail Day themselves and have been sponsoring the event ever since.

A new location for Lynchburg Rail Day was found at the Boonsboro Ruritan Club, just off of U.S. 501 North near Lynchburg, Virginia. You are invited to take the short and scenic drive northwest of Lynchburg to our biggest location ever! There is plenty of free parking and the building is handicap accessible.Come join us as we carry on an annual Lynchburg tradition!

Children's Corner

children corner smThe children's train play area proves to be popular every year.  We will provide durable Lionel electric trains and plenty of track that children can use to create layouts and run trains.  The Chapter will provide experienced school teachers to supervise the play area and assist the children in having an enjoyable and successful experience with the trains.  We do ask that each family group have one adult remain with their children while they enjoy the trains in the play area.

Model Layouts

n scalers smEvery year we have clubs, organizations, and individuals who share modular or portable layouts for the enjoyment of those attending. It is interesting and fun to watch various approaches by those who  demonstrate modeling railroad operations. Children of all ages and serious modelers alike learn something by what these participants share each year. Some of the groups who have participated in recent years include LyNchburg Area N-Scalers, The Simmons Family, Fred Myer's Steam Locomotive Servicing Facility, Carstens Publications Model Crafsman Magazine Projects, Rico Colorado on the Rio Grande Southern Layout.

Vendors

vendors smVendors are the backbone of our show. They are model railroad dealers, publication vendors, collectors, and railroadiana dealers. Their displays represent a variety of railroad interest and often offer special discounts on some items. Peruse, ask questions, and you may find just what you have been looking for.

White Elephant Table

wh elephant smIn addition to our venders, the Blue Ridge Chapter will have a White Elephant Table featuring all manner of model railroad items as well as books and railroadiana.  Portions of the proceeds from these sales benefit the BRC NRHS and its programs.

Lunch and Concessions

concessions smCome enjoy Rail Day and stick around for lunch! Members of the Blue Ridge Chapter NRHS will once again be cooking up several lunch items available throughout the day.  All proceeds from our concessions benefit the chapter and its programs. Samples from last year's menu:
                         Carolina BBQ Sandwich, chips, drink
                         Hot Dog, chips, drink
We'll also have chips, sodas, water, and coffee all day long.
