Inauguration of Regional Amtrak service was greatly anticipated and has proven a wise endeavor by Amtrak, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the City of Lynchburg. It has exceded the expectations in ridership and revenue. The inauguration event was held September 30, 2009 and has inspired further development planning for service to Roanoke.
